Brewing Indian Coffee at Home

Indian coffee suits several brew methods. The variables that matter most at home are grind size, ratio and water temperature — in that order.

South Indian filter

A fine grind, firm tamp and patience. The decoction should drip, not pour. Serve with hot milk to taste.

Pour-over and French press

  • Pour-over: medium grind, roughly 1:16 coffee to water
  • French press: coarse grind, four minutes, press gently
  • Use water just off the boil, not boiling

Storage

Keep beans sealed, away from heat and light, and grind immediately before brewing. Whole beans hold their character far longer than pre-ground coffee.
