Indian Coffee

Indian Specialty Coffee

India grows coffee under shade, alongside pepper, cardamom and fruit trees. KOORG works with Indian coffee across regions, varieties and processing styles — and supplies it to cafés, businesses and home brewers.

Regions

Where Indian coffee grows

Indian coffee is not one flavour. Region, altitude, shade, variety and processing all shape what ends up in the cup.

Karnataka

India's largest coffee-growing state, including Kodagu, Chikmagalur and Hassan. Shade-grown arabica and robusta across a wide range of altitudes.

Kerala

Wayanad and the surrounding hills, historically strong in robusta, with monsooned coffees associated with the Malabar coast.

Tamil Nadu

The Nilgiris, Shevaroys and Pulneys, producing arabica with a distinct profile shaped by higher elevations.

Emerging regions

Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and the North East are producing increasingly interesting lots as processing improves.

Processing

How the coffee is prepared

Processing decisions made at the estate and mill have as much influence on the cup as the variety itself.

Washed

Fruit removed before drying. Typically cleaner and more transparent in the cup.

Natural

Dried in whole fruit. Usually heavier bodied with more pronounced fruit character.

Honey / pulped natural

Some fruit mucilage retained during drying, sitting between washed and natural.

Monsooned

A distinctly Indian process where coffee is exposed to monsoon winds, softening acidity and building body.
